March 1962 Storm - Long Beach Island, New Jersey - Holgate Section
Destroyer USS Monssen washed onto the beach

Looking down Bay Avenue, about a quarter mile from Jacqueline, sat the USS Monssen which had become beached just beyond the wooden jetty. It was being towed to the Philadelphia Navy Yard from the Chesapeake Bay, but had broken free of its towrope during the storm. It took more then six months to get the large ship off the beach and refloated.
